We all have dreams on a regular basis, even if some of us can’t remember as many as others. For hundreds of years people have been trying to decipher meanings from their dreams, which is not an easy task because of how random and unpredictable they can be. In this article we’ll be exploring what dream interpretation really is and how you can start to learn the skills required for it yourself.
The first thing to remember is that all dreams are unique. While there are common themes of dream that many people have, the actual dreams themselves will always be slightly different which makes interpreting dreams even more difficult in most cases. Some people believe that dreams and meaningless and that they are just our brains way of sorting through all its data while we are asleep – and that might be true – but other people believe that our dreams are connected to our everyday reality and are telling us things about ourselves.
I’m sure we’ve all had an event happen in our day and then dreamt about something similar at night, so there is no doubt that dreams are affected by our lives in some way. For some people this is proof that dreams can give us insights into our lives and future.
So when did interpreting dreams really start? The ancient Greeks used to believe that people could be cured of illness through the power of dreams. They also believed that you could see omens in dreams and hence the priests of ancient Greece were often used as dream interpreters. There is also history of dream interpretation in China around the 16th century and in Europe a bit later on. However it is not inconceivable that people were practicing dream interpretations across the world long before this.
So how can you start interpreting your dreams? There are many resources online where people share their dreams and other people can help interpret them. Reading these is a great way of getting a feel for the different kinds of dreams and what they could be interpreted as. Remember that different people will have different interpretations of a dream and in general there is no right or wrong answer. Often dreams are difficult to decipher though and there is not always an obvious reason for the dream. The best way to learn anything is through other people who have been practicing for a long time and dream interpretation is no exception.
